Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind this week. I saw it a couple of years ago and didn’t really like it. I got caught up in the dynamics of the Joel and Clementine, ie the introvert, relationship desiring man falling for the audacious, drunken, disposable relationship woman. I remember thinking, why would you go through all of this just to be with someone you can’t stand?

Watching it again, I really enjoyed it. The trip back thru time and forward and back really showed the progression of the relationship, from those first anxious, nervous moments to comfortability to acceptance of the partner. What clinched the movie for me was a comment made during the extras: You can’t help who you fall in love with. That is the centerpiece of the movie, and Kaufman’s script and Gondry’s direction are just a wonderful, unique, and stunning vehicle. If you haven’t seen it, check it out, especially if you’re a Kaufman fan (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation). If you haven’t seen it in a while, pick it up, maybe even as a date night flick.

By the way, if you watch the commercial for Lacuna, it has the same music as the intro for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
